Tutoring is a great way to work from home either as your full-time job or on the side to help earn extra cash. You get to share knowledge, give back, set your own hours, and earn a decent wage right from your computer.

A quick Google search will fill your screen with websites that offer tutoring services. It can be hard to determine which ones are legit, which are a scam, and which are worth your time.

So to help you out, we’ve curated a list of the top 8 highest-paying tutoring jobs that we could find so you can get started earning extra cash today. 

1. VIPKid

VIPKid was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in San Francisco and Beijing. As one of the oldest tutoring companies, you can be sure VIPKid is a great platform to work on, and you will receive a steady stream of tutoring gigs.

VIPKid is an English language tutoring company that helps kids in China learn conversational English. The students are ages 4 to 12 and the classes are 30 minutes long.

To start teaching, you have to live in the U.S. or Canada and have a bachelor’s degree. There are no specific English or teaching certificate requirements. You don’t need to speak a foreign language, but you do need to have English as a second language (ESL) teaching skills.

They offer a flexible schedule so you can work as much or as little as you want without fear of reprimand. VIPKids does recommend offereing 7 1/2 hours of teaching or 15-time slots per week.

You do need to keep in mind, though, that the hours of work will need to be in line with Beijing time. The thirteen-hour time difference between the U.S. and China means that the peak hours are Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern Time and Saturdays and Sundays 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern Time. 

Tutors can expect to be paid $14 – $22/ hour, depending on your experience.

2. Book Nook

Book Nook was founded in 2016 and works within school districts to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds learn more. 
As a Book Nook tutor, you’ll teach students ranging from kindergarten through grade 8 in groups of four. All the students will be at the same skill level but they may be of different ages.

You will help them with language, reading, and math skills. Book Nook creates lesson plans for teachers so that’s one thing you won’t have to worry about.

Book Nook does have strict requirements for its tutors. You must have either two years of online or in-person teaching experience or a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any subject and one year of teaching experience. If you are in your final year of getting your teaching credentials and have at least one year of teaching experience then you can apply and Book Nook will consider you.

The pay at Book Nook starts at $15/hour but can be up to $22/hour depending on your experience and the different programs you choose to tutor in. 

3. Wyzant

Wyzant is a bit different than the other tutoring platforms in that it’s a marketplace where you find your own students. You make a tutoring profile and then connect with a student who’s interested in your subject. With over 6 million visitors each month, it shouldn’t be too hard to find students.

You can choose from over 300 subjects to tutor people in, and you can also choose in-person tutoring or online. Due to the in-person tutoring option, Wyzant does require a background check. 

Unlike other tutoring platforms, there are no specific educational requirements. You just have to be a U.S. resident. So it’s a great place to get experience if you’re just starting off teaching.

You get to pick your pay rate, keeping in mind that the platform will keep 25% of your rate. On average, tutors charge anywhere from $25 to $100/hour making Wyzant one of the highest-paying sites around. Tutors specializing in technical subjects like physics, computer science, and engineering are in high demand and typically command higher pay rates.

TutorMe is another marketplace for tutors and students to connect online. The EdTech company was founded in 2015 in Los Angelos, California, and hires university students and graduates with a GPA of 3.5 or more.

To get started, make your profile, and students will connect with you on their own, or the platform will match you up.

The platform offers flexible work schedules and a steady stream of income since it’s very popular plus prompt payouts.

The website doesn’t say how much they pay their tutors, but a Google search did show $16/ hour. 

5. GoGo Kid

GoGo Kid is another ESL (English as a second language) platform that connects native English speakers with students in China. The platform was established in 2018 and is based in Beijing. The lessons are all 30 minutes and use the Chinese standard curriculum which is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards.

To tutor on the platform you have to go through an application process that can take up to two weeks and includes an interview, orientation, demo class, and training session.

You much be eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada and have a bachelor’s degree, valid ESL certification, prior teaching experience, and be a native English speaker.

Both the application process and the requirements are rather rigorous, but you will; make $14-$25 an hour based on your class rate and other incentives.

6. Qkids

Qkids is an ESL platform for Chinese children ages 6-12. As a North American tutor, you will connect with these kids to teach them basic English. Over 800,000 children have signed up since the company was established in 2015.

Each lesson is 30 mins, and you don’t necessarily need to take the time to create a lesson plan, but you do need to be familiar with the material. You don’t want to be fumbling around since you have such a short time with the students. 

Qkids

Qkids offers narrative and game-based learning to encourage participation and help kids learn with ease. Tutors don’t have to make lesson plans or worry about anything since it’s all provided on the platform. The software is very interactive, possibly the most interactive on the market. 

To teach on Qkids, you must be able to legally work in the U.S. or Canada, have a bachelor’s degree, and a teaching license or English teaching certificate TESOL/TEFL/CELTA. They also ask that you commit to working at least 6 hrs each week for 6 months. The pay varies from $16-$20 / hour.

7. Outschool

Outschool is another tutoring platform where you create a profile, set your own price, and start connecting with students. It was founded in 2015 in San Francisco and offers a variety of small-group classes online.

You can tutor in various subjects, including math, science, how to play a musical instrument, and so many more. You set your own class length and prepare your own lessons and curriculum.

The students are in the age range of 3 to 18 needing help to varying degrees in certain subjects. 

To teach on Outschool you must reside in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, or Wales, but no formal education is required.

Tutors earn a wide range from $10-$50 per hour and are paid weekly. Outschool does take 30% of your profit which is something to keep in mind while setting your prices.

8. Preply

Preply is an EdTech company and teacher marketplace founded in 2012 in Ukraine. The online platform is thriving with over 1 million students from 185 countries, 140,000 tutors from 203 countries, and 300,000 lessons per month on over 1,500 topics. 

With such a large base, you’ll be sure to find students to tutor. You can choose to teach anything you’re passionate about from languages to art, hobbies, or university courses. Classes are either one-on-one or you can meet in small groups of 4-6 students. And of course, it’s very flexible allowing you to work when you want.

Most of the students on Preply are adults, so it’s a great choice if you’d rather work with an older age group. It’s also good if you’re just starting out and need to get teaching expereince.

Tutors can either create their own lesson plans or use ones predesigned by Preply.

You set your own pay rate. Most tutors start low and then increase their rate as they gain more students, experience, and higher ratings. The pay rate depends on the subject and can be anywhere from $10 to $38.90/hour, going all the way up to $55/hour during exam periods and for high-demand topics like calculus. The average pay is $18.30/hour. Do keep in mind that Preply takes a steep 33% commission. The more hours you teach, the less they charge. When you reach 400 hours the commission charge drops to 18%.
